      Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. . . . Thank God! He lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

      He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
    And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
    A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
    And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
    His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!
    His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
    His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,
    And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
    The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
    And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
    He had a broad face and a little round belly,
    That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
    He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
    And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
    A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
    Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
    He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
    And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
    And laying his finger aside of his nose,
    And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
    He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
    And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

    Here comes Santa Claus

    (Gene Autry, O.Haldeman (c) 1947)

    Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus,
    Right down Santa Claus lane.

    Vixen, Blitzen, all his reindeer
    Pulling on the reins.
    Bells are ringing, children singing,
    All is merry and bright.
    Hang your stockings and say a prayer,
    'cause Santa Claus comes tonight.

    Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus,
    Riding down Santa Claus Lane.

    He's got a bag that's filled with toys
    For boys and girls again.
    Hear those sleigh bells jingle jangle,
    What a beautiful sight.
    Jump in bed and cover up your head,
    Because Santa Claus comes tonight.

    Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus,
    Riding down Santa Claus Lane.

    He doesn't care if you're a rich or poor boy,
    He loves you just the same.
    Santa knows that we're god's children,
    That makes everything right.
    Fill your hears with Christmas cheer,
    'cause Santa Claus comes tonight.

    Well, here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus,
    Riding down Santa Claus lane.

    He'll come around when the chimes ring out
    It's Christmas morn again.
    Peace on earth will come to all
    If we just follow the light
    Let's give thanks to the lord above,
    'cause Santa Claus comes tonight.

    And now I am writing in white on a green snowflake background. This is fun. It just seems more magical than plain old black writing. Thanks for the name of the painting. "Summer"? Hmmm. I am glad you felt like writing a post. And I certainly do love the "Yes, Virginia," essay. I think about you every day. Please rememeber you can email me anytime you want and if you email me your phone number I will even call you. (But only if you want - maybe you just want to email - but write me anytime!
